Our Approach

ThinkLikeTeens makes interpretive suggestions about human behaviour, which is a responsibility worth being explicit about. These are the rules the product is built to follow.

Possibilities, not verdicts

Every interpretation is framed as something that may be happening. A tool that has never met your teenager is not in a position to tell you what is true about them.

No diagnosis, ever

ThinkLikeTeens does not name conditions, assess risk, or suggest that behaviour indicates a disorder. Where a topic touches wellbeing or safety, it points to qualified professionals instead.

Neutral toward both people

Interpretations do not assign blame to the parent or the teen. Understanding why something happened is treated as separate from deciding whether it was acceptable.

Parent-facing only

Everything is written for the adult. There is no content directed at teenagers and no attempt to speak on a young person's behalf.

Grounded in ordinary development

Explanations draw on widely described features of adolescence — the need for autonomy and privacy, shifting sleep patterns, heightened social stakes — rather than on claims about any individual.

Written to be disagreed with

You know your teenager. If a reading does not fit, discarding it is the correct response, and the wording is designed to make that easy.

Where the limits are

ThinkLikeTeens cannot observe your teenager, cannot detect risk, and cannot replace a professional who can. It is a thinking aid for a parent, not an assessment of a child. Any concern involving safety, self-harm, substance use, exploitation or sustained distress belongs with a doctor, counsellor or emergency service.
